Apple silently updates the iPad 2 battery life

If you thought the New iPad (third generation) stole the thunder from the second generation iPad, think again. Apple may have dropped the price on the iPad 2 making it the most desirable tablet yet but it has also added one feature that may just make it a little more desirable than the new iPad – better apple battery. The iPad 2 has not only seen a price drop to Rs. 24,500 for the Wi-Fi only 16GB model and Rs. 32,900 for the Wi-Fi +3G model, but the device has seen a new SoC as well. Dubbed the iPad 2,4, Anand Tech provides us with details of the device. The iPad 2,4 has a 32nm LP SoC as opposed to the 45nm LP SoC found on the previous iterations. And what does this upgrade mean to the consumers? Well two hours of better battery life for starters, the iPad 2 anyways clamed of 10-hours of battery life. In Anand Tech’s tests, the iPad 2,4 outperforms the iPad 2 and the new iPad by miles. So, how will you know that the iPad 2 that you picked up has the 32nm LP SoC? Well, the box is identical to any other iPad 2 box so good luck truing to identify it from the box itself. But, if the iPad is running iOS 5.1 then it is the new 32nm iPad 2. If it is running iOS 5.0.1, then it is the older generation iPad 2. You can also run performance benchmarks such as Geekbench, linpack and more to find out information about the SoC. All indications seem to point to the iPad 2,4 being relatively rare, which makes sense considering what's inside it. Although the iPad 2,1 and its 3G brethren all used a 45nm Apple A5 SoC, the iPad 2,4 uses a die-shrunk 32nm version. The performance remains the same, but the die is much smaller. This isn't however just a normal die shrink, as Apple is using Samsung's 32nm high-k + metal gate LP transistors for this new A5 die. Intel was first to make the HK+MG transition back at 45nm in 2007 and correctly predicted that no one else would make the move until 32nm at the earliest. Transistors are amazingly complex to fully understand, but at a high level they're quite simple. Imagine a transistor as a silicon based switch. When on, current flows, and when off, current stops flowing. The smaller you make a transistor, the more likely it is to misbehave. If current flows while the transistor is off, you waste power. This is known as leakage current and can come from a number of sources.

The New iPad Has a Really Massive Battery

When Apple unveiled the new iPad (which is now designated as "third gen" from Apple's site), it said boasted that it featured battery life that was no different from that of the iPad 2.

Having something the same as the previous generation isn't typically something to brag about, but in this case, it is. The battery of the new iPad is 42.5 Wh, which is literally huge. The one in the iPad is just 25 Wh in comparison, making the new one 70 percent greater in capacity.

To put that in perspective, that's more juice than in the 11-inch MacBook Air and nearly as big as the battery in today's 13-inch MacBook Air at 50 Wh.

Obviously LTE brings a lot more battery drain, as evidenced by 4G smartphones. The real need for all that extra power is likely the upgraded screen with its 3.1 million pixels.

The new iPad may be thicker and heavier than the iPad 2, but all that heft and bulk (which is actually quite minimal) has gone to all the places where it counts.

We can't wait to see the teardowns to show us how much of the entire device is just battery.

Heftier battery makes new iPad will be thicker and heavier; battery life unchanged


Apple’s new iPad will be thicker and heavier than the iPad 2 because it features a bigger, more powerful battery.

Even with a bigger battery, the battery life of the device stays the same: about 10 hours. That’s because Apple has quadrupled the screen resolution, which in turn requires more computing power.

Apple revealed the device Wednesday at an event in San Francisco.

The new iPad will be 9.4 millimeters thick, or 0.37 inches. That compares with 8.8 millimeters, or 0.34 inches, for the iPad 2.

The weight of the Wi-Fi-only model is going up from 1.33 pounds to 1.44 pounds. Models equipped with modems for cellular data access are slightly heavier.

The weight places the new iPad in between the original iPad and the iPad 2. However, the new iPad is still significantly slimmer than the first iPad, which was half an inch thick.

The battery capacity of the new iPad is 70 percent higher than for the iPad 2.

The new iPad will go on sale on March 16 in the U.S., Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

This is a pretty good replacement apple laptop battery. As others have mentioned, it isn't exactly like the original Apple battery aesthetically, but it works pretty well. I think I am getting about 2 hours out of it, although I feel like the battery life is already dwindling a bit after just about a month of use. However, as the PowerBook G4 is an older model, I didn't want to spend $100 on a new Apple battery that would outlive the computer. So, I"m happy with this battery overall.

Bought this Compaq Presario CQ61-217TU Battery to replace one that, after three years, finally died. Looks exactly like the one it replaced, but dosen't fit into the slot as well. The new battery snaps into place and stays there, but there is a slight difference in the fit. Other than that, I am pleased with this item. Battery life seems to be acceptable, and I have experienced no problems at all, other than the fit.

I've owned a studio 1537 for the last three years, and my old battery was no longer lasting a reasonable time. Bought this Dell Studio 1537 Battery and for now, charges are lasting around 2:30 to 3 hours. I'm not sure how long laptop batteries are supposed to work before they start to lose the ability to hold a charge... my old one lasted about two years, hopefully this one will too.

This Fujitsu LifeBook P2120 Battery looks and works like the original equipment for half the price. I've only had it a month. Time will tell if it's a good value.

Nothing much to add. Buying process was good. The HP Compaq NX6310 Battery showed up on time - which was very important to me. I was expecting the battery to have longer use time but I guess this is what you can expect.
