How to keep your laptop battery alive

Here are a few simple tips on how to prolong the lifespan of ANY Lithium battery (without diving into the chemistry), whether it's your laptop battery or your cellphone battery.

Note: This article is not teaching you how to give yourself more battery life per charge, but how to maintain your battery so you don't have to replace it within the average 2-3 years replacement cycle of a Lithium battery.

1. Contrary to the common misconception of completely discharging your batteries to fix "memory effects", DO NOT DISCHARGE YOUR LAPTOP BATTERIES COMPLETELY. Doing so will wear out your battery.

2. DO NOT COMPLETELY CHARGE YOUR BATTERY. Just the opposite of tip 1, charging your batteries completely also wears it out.

If you usually use your laptop on only battery, it is best to charge the battery to the range of 85-90% of its maximum capacity and then unplug your battery. That way you can have decent battery life, while prolonging the lifespan of your laptop battery. If you don't think you'll be taking your laptop on-the-go anytime soon, charge your battery to about 40-50% of its maximum capacity and unplug your battery from your laptop. Keep the battery in moderate room temperatures.
