During the deluge of iPad 2 coverage last week, you may have missed CNET’s handy tablets table. In it we gave an overview of the major non-Windows
tablets already released and those soon-to-be released.

For the few tablets we actually have in the CNET Labs, we’re able to go a bit more in depth with what each has to offer. For the last few weeks, we’ve tested the Web site speed and video apple battery life of a whole mess of different tablets. We’ve also tested their default and maximum respective luminosities and each tablet’s contrast ratio.

Here’s what we have so far, but this is just the tip of the iceberg. We’ll be adding more tablets and additional tests over the coming days, weeks, and months.


How we test tablets

In the CNET Labs, we currently run three different tests to evaluate the performance of non-Windows tablets.

Battery life
We evaluate laptop battery life by continually running a movie file on the tablet until its battery dies.

We set each tablet to Airplane mode and adjust its respective brightnesses to 150 candelas per square meter (cd/M2) or as close to that number as possible.

For the
iPad, we run the iPad version of “Toy Story 3.” For Android tablets, a 720p version of “Toy Story 3″ is run. The reason we chose 720p for Android was that not every tablet can run 1080p video just yet, and we wanted to make sure we tested Android tablets under the same methodology.

On iPad, we ran the movie through its
iPod app; for Android we used the movie player, mVideoPlayer, as it provides a much needed repeat video function that not all native Android movie players include.

Site-loading speed
We used GiantBomb.com as our Web site of choice, as it doesn’t use Flash or have many dynamic elements. Each tablet was connected to the same closed network with no other devices on it, with the router about 5 feet away. The test began the moment we pressed Enter, with the end of the test signified by the disappearance of the browser’s blue progress bar.

We used the latest version of iOS for the iPad, and the Xoom is, of course, using Honeycomb, with all other Android tablets using Android OS 2.2.

Contrast ratio and brightness
We also tested the maximum brightness, default brightness, and contrast ratio for each tablet. We conducted these tests using the Minolta CA-210 display color analyzer. We used a completely white screen to test the brightness and a completely black screen to test the black level. We then divided the maximum brightness by the maximum black level to get the contrast ratio.

Leaked MacBook Pro spec suggests Core i3, OS SSD, 12 hour battery

The unveiling of a new range of MacBook Pro laptops is expected to happen on Steve Jobs’ birthday this Thursday. There’s also been a suggestion that Apple will include Intel’s Light Peak high-speed connection under a new name. Dell Inspiron 1721 Battery for Dell Inspiron 1721 Laptop.

Further evidence that this event is actually going to happen has come from Intel, as the company has revealed its intention to hold a press event on Thursday too. If Apple is adding Light Peak to the MacBook Pro, you can bet Intel want to also tout the tech alongside them or at another event on the same day. French website MacGeneration also claims to have uncovered the specs for the new Pro line-up. Here’s what is being stated:

• Intel Core i3 processor
• 16GB SSD mSATA drive for OS
• 4GB RAM on 13″ & 15″ models, 8GB on 17″
• 12 hour apple laptop batteries life on 13″, 10 hours on 15″
• 1440 x 900 resolution display for 13″ model, 1680 x 1050 for 15″
• Third USB port on 13″ model
• Matte screen option on high-end 13″ model
• 13″ & 15″ models are 200 grams lighter
• 17″ model 300 grams heavier

Although not complete, some of these claims backup what we have already heard such as the dedicated OS SSD claim.

Other rumors include the white MacBook being scrapped and the MacBook Air 11″ becoming the entry-level model. We also get an idea of the expected pricing for the new models:

• MacBook Pro 13″: 1,199-1,499 Euros / $1,634-$2,043
• MacBook Pro 15″: 1,799-2,199 Euros / $2,452-$2,997
• MacBook Pro 17″: 2,449 Euros / $3,406

Those prices were provided in Euros only so may be very different when the official U.S. prices are revealed. The current MacBook Pro range has prices between $1,199 and $2,299 and we expect the new models to be in a similar range.
The next few weeks are going to prove a very busy time for Apple if all this turns out to be true. If handling new MacBook Pro shipments after Thursday wasn’t enough, there’s a little iPad 2 event coming up on March 2 which is sure to get Apple fans around the world excitedly getting their credit cards out once again.

When manufacturers talk about how great their laptops are one of the feature they all highlight is battery life. Remember when getting a couple hours out your laptop battery was awesome? Yeah now getting something less than 5 or even 8 hours isn't acceptable. The only problem is that in the real world it's often hard to get those kinds of results, unless you know a few tricks.

It doesn't take too much to get a lot more time out of your laptop battery, just, well, 10 simple things:

1.Turn off WiFi and Bluetooth if you don't need them. Obviously if you're trying to be online when you're on battery power you need to keep these on, but if you're on a flight or someplace where you aren't going to be online, just turn the WiFi off. Same goes for Bluetooth, if you don't need it on, turn it off.

2.Turn down your screen brightness. While screens are a lot more efficient than the used to be, you can still squeeze more time out of your battery (such as acer laptop battery) if the screen isn't at full power. The trick here is turn down the screen until it's too dark to use, then bump it up a notch or two. That should give you the right balance of brightness and power saving.

3.If you have a backlit keyboard, turn the light off. Just like the screen, the keyboard light drains the battery pretty quickly. 4.If you're not using it, quit it. Every app that is running needs a little processor and hard drive time to stay running, all those apps add up to more drain. And don't just quit the apps you can see all the extras like Dropbox or mouse tools or other add ons use power too¡ if you don't really need them, just quit them.

5.If your laptop has a ¡°power saving mode¡± use it. For example on MacBook Pros there is a setting for More Performance (it can tap into the graphics chip) or Better Battery (no graphics chip). Better battery (such as apple laptop battery) is clearly the choice here.

Q: I have a 2003 BMW Z4. The battery died twice without warning because of old age. I've been advised to check the battery regularly, especially after one year. I bought a $50 battery tester so I can check it myself every other week. Is this is a good plan in terms of hp pavilion dv4 battery reliability?</p>

A: I admire your willingness to test the battery on a regular basis, but how is testing the battery going to prolong its life? It's not, but it may give you an idea of when the battery is starting to fail.

Why has my laptop battery life suddenly deteriorated

The maximum life was 1.5 hours and suddenly has dropped to a maximum capacity of 20 minutes? I have had the ACER AS07A31 Battery for about a year, do laptop batteries like that deteriorate with time?

Yes, the cells die over time. Unfortunately batteries aren’t covered under extended warranty.

And if you do not plug your computer in while you are are on it almost every time, you could loose battery life. If you do plug your computer in almost every time, cells do die so you should strongly consider to buy a new battery

There is a simple answer to your problem. The Dell Inspiron 2200 Battery for the unit is likely damaged or simply over-used. You will have to purchase a new battery in order for the laptop to work without being constantly plugged in. Normally I would have suggested to check the Power Settings but 10 minutes seems too short even for the most non-energy efficient machines out there.

Even the maximum life of 1.5 hours seems a bit short. Anyway, the battery juice is probably worn out.

Here are some tips to conserve dell battery power in the future:
1. Once a battery is fully charged, you should not leave the charger plugged in.

2. Most chargers and batteries have a 500-time charge and discharge limit and then they start getting weak. So it is best not to keep on plugging the charger in and out.

3. It is best to charge the battery only when it reaches less than 40% of battery power. Charging the battery when it is half full will make the battery weaker.

4. Some also recommend the following: only charge the battery when the laptop is turned off or on standby. When you are able to use the charger, then use the charger without the battery in the laptop. If you can’t use the charger, then use the battery.

5. If not using the battery for a long time, then store it in a cool place, i.e., the refrigerator, using a ziplock bag.
