How to Increase Laptop's Battery Life

Modern operating systems, games and other software applications tend to use more and more of the battery life of your laptop. Here are some tips using which you can increase laptop's battery life.

1. The laptop screen consumes significant amount of power. Adjust the brightness of the display - most of us don't need the maximum level of brightness! You can change it in Control Panel -> Display -> Adjust Brightness.

2. There are a number of power schemes in your OS. You should choose the optimum power scheme for your laptop. You can manage the power scheme in Control Panel -> Power Options. Here you can also customize the plan by setting the time to dim the display, turn-off the display and put the computer to sleep.

3. Try to avoid frequent discharge of the laptop battery. Ideally you should not let it fall down below 40% level and recharge it before it does.

4. If your laptop battery is Nickel based, you should avoid keeping it fully charged at high temperatures. For example, if you are going to keep your laptop in a hot car, make sure that the battery is not fully charged.

5. Always use right laptop adapter to charge your laptop battery. If the adapter is not proper, the voltage level may not be proper and hence it can spoil the battery life.

6. Bluetooth and WiFi also use significant amount of power. Hence, it is recommended that you switch them off when you are not using them.

7. Regularly defragment your hard drive. It will put less strain on your hard drive and hence on the laptop battery.

8. Stop running unnecessary processes in background. You can monitor all processes by pressing 'Ctrl-Alt-Del' -> Start Task Manager -> Processes tab. Here you can check and kill the unnecessary programs.
